Dynamic URL rewriting in Yahoo!

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Yahoo! is rolling out dynamic URL rewriting configuration to webmasters. What this means is that you can tell the search engine what dynamic URL parameters to ignore, such as sessions variables or tracking parameters that are useful for you but might appear to search engines as though there are many copies of a page at […]

Alexa statistics self-selection skew

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Alexa is Amazon’s search engine and web toolbar. The toolbar sends data about its owner’s online behavior back to the Alexa servers which compile the statistics and provide free information — including traffic estimates and popularity rankings — about virtually any remotely popular site on the web.
It is tempting to take statistics, particularly free ones, […]

Understanding the Google cache

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Google and other search engines cache pages, storing copies of them that they use for indexing. You can think of the cache as a snapshot of a page at a moment in time.
You can examine the cached copy of a particular page by creating a query like this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:http://www.web1marketing.com
You can look at any page by placing […]

Using Google Webmaster Tools

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Google’s Webmaster Tools shed light on how your website is seen by Google and do various indexing-related tasks.
Like the Yahoo Site Explorer we described earlier,  the best functionality is limited to those who can upload a file and thus “verify” themselves as site owners. Once you have done so, you’ll be able to do the […]

Using Yahoo Site Explorer

A quick search didn’t turn up any news from Google or any obvious posts about this, so maybe they’re rolling these out piece-meal or I’m ahead of the curve on catching this. […]

This post is just a quick tip on getting access to complete AdWords documention. Ordinarily their support system pages display a subset of available topics, and you have to rely upon their search to serve up the right information. However, you can get a complete dump of AdWords documentation here. Note that this trick works […]

Rumor has it that Microsoft has bought DeepMetrix, a web analytics firm that competes with ClickTracks, WebTrends, etc. No press release at the moment that I’m writing this, but this post in Threadwatch suggests that it will be rolled into MSN adCenter.

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

Coremetrics has just announced the acquisition of IBM’s SurfAid Analytics business. SurfAid is an on-demand hosted analytics service geared for large websites. Coremetrics is vague about how it will integrate SurfAid into its existing product offerings.
The SurfAid product is intended for large organizations with significant traffic volume and large analytics budgets. Under IBM, it […]

Tips for Preventing Click Fraud

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

The Marketing Experiments Blog recently posted the results of a click fraud study. The study itself is interesting but somewhat inconclusive due to its short duration and limited scope. However, they make some excellent suggestions for preventing or at least reducing click fraud, some of which include:

Watch for significant variations in ad campaign performance.
Be conservative […]
