Dynamic URL rewriting in Yahoo!

Yahoo! is rolling out dynamic URL rewriting configuration to webmasters. What this means is that you can tell the search engine what dynamic URL parameters to ignore, such as sessions variables or tracking parameters that are useful for you but might appear to search engines as though there are many copies of a page at different addresses.

In order to implement dynamic URL rewriting, you’ll need to enroll the site in Site Explorer for Yahoo! Search, which is a useful tool anyway, particularly for sitemaps.

The ability to tell Yahoo! to ignore some URL parameters should not encourage the use of such parameters because other search engines may not support such a feature and they make it harder for users to share URLs. It can also pose problems for analytics packages that aren’t properly configured.
